[/blockquote]NATHANIEL CHRISTCHILD BUCKFORD
carved my name in a tree.
name: Nathaniel Christchild Buckford
nicknames: Nath, Coffeeboy.
gender: Male.
age: twenty three
birthday: fourteenth may
oh my god, you look just like shakira!
hair color: light brown
eye color: blue
height/weight: Nathaniel stands at just under six feet tall and weighs about one hundred and sixty pounds.
special features: There is a small scar underneath Nathaniel's chin from fighting one of his friends with a video case.
clothes: Nath's got to be partial to shirts; he loves them - as long as it's not just white, he'll wear it, usually with a waistcoat of some kind. Don't assume, however, that this means he is all formal; quite the opposite, he's forever in a pair of jeans and converse. If he's not in a shirt, waistcoat and occasionally a tie, it's because it's a cold day, during which he will be in a hooded jacket or a trenchcoat. Either way, he'll still have a shirt on underneath - he just can't help himself. Feel sorry for him and donate money to a charity dealing with shirt addictions.
she’s cheer captain and i’m on the bleachers.
likes: + Shirts (Hadn't you guessed already?)
+ Brittany - it's a lovely place even if the weather is crap.
+ Nights in in front of the television watching slushy pap
+ Oddly enough, looking after Jill. It's not easy, but someone has to do it and he does still love her. He knows she's in there somewhere. Somewhere...
+ History - otherwise Nathaniel's choice of degree would have been pretty stupid.
+ Roman Empire - The looks he gets when Nathaniel tells people the Empire didn't fall until AD 1461, but the collapse began in AD 130 are just priceless.
+ The colour blue
dislikes: - Grey on walls - it's like a prison or a morgue.
- Speaking of which, hospital lighting.
- And hospitals in general.
- Violence.
- Capitalism.
- FOX News. They just all seem to be jingoistic nutters.
- Restaurants - they're just too formal and a bit scary.
talents: Nathaniel always has a natural gift for reading and learning from books, and he's utterly brilliant with figures.
hopes: + Obviously, to get Jill back to the woman she used to be.
+ Get a proper house.
+ Getting married and raising a proper family.
fears: - Dementia; he's seen someone completely lose themself and that happening to Nathaniel scares him witless.
- Hospitals.
- Russians. They're just all so enigmatic and dark - in many ways, a bit like space.
career: resident
personality: Nathaniel is the proverbial charming, kind guy that you see in films or you hear on the internet lamenting how girls immediately go for a bastard and then claim that all men are evil. Nathan, however, has no such problems; people get along with him easily enough and usually there's a girl after him at some point - perhaps because of his boyish looks. They're usually turned off, however, by the person underneath the facade; a bookish, nerdy history student with no interest in girls any longer, except for one - his dedication to Jill is absolute, and comes first over anyone else. Brought up as a staunch Catholic, Nathaniel's conservative ways help him be a nice person - not being after pussy all the time gives a little perspective. He tries to keep the Christian thing quiet, but he never arranges anything on Sundays. At the end of the day, Nathaniel is a kind person. There's not much else to be said.
He's slow to anger and quick to befriend, and is almost always ready to do someone a favour without even thinking about getting something back from them. Depending on your perspective, this makes him an idiot.
i grew up in a pretty house.
.
mother: Montana Ridgeway, currently aged 47, typist and widow.
father: Daniel Buckford, died aged 33, Sergeant .
siblings: Three sisters - all triplets, aged twenty two, and two elder brothers - Daniel Jr., aged twenty five and a private first class serving in Afghanistan. The eldest in the family, Warren, is aged twenty seven and is a care nurse in a Texan hospice.
other family members: "Really? Do you want my entire family tree?"
background: Born and raised in Texas, Nathaniel was baptised only three days after he was born, and was brought up more Catholic than the Pope. Living in one of the stereotypical old cattle towns, with a population of less than a thousand, Nathaniel's upbringing was largely sheltered and boring. Since his father was usually away on manuevers somewhere, and the other kids were rarely doing anything interesting, Nathaniel retreated into reading, steered by his mother. By the time he began Kindergarten, Nathaniel could read every part of the bible, chapter and verse, and this snowballed into learning everything he could from books. The only slight issue was the death of Nathaniel's ever-absent father in the First Gulf War in 1991. Nathaniel, at the age of five, didn't really give much of a damn. He had barely known him and didn't particularly like him. He was a distant figure, never present, and when he was he was cold and unnaproachable for the young boy. His elder brothers seemed more upset, but Nathaniel was less concerned.
History, science, geography; everything flowed in seamlessly except maths - that was always a tricky point. This line inevitably lead to Nathaniel becoming something of a nerd, and it wasn't until he was thirteen that he really got his nose out a book and started enjoying life properly - friends, talking to those scary 'girl' things, et al. Infact, it was one of those girls that was going to start getting his attention; after graduation, Nathaniel's single mother put her wages as a typist and her husband's pension payments to put Nathaniel into university; he had majored in history and passed with a A Plus grade.
The decision was made, and Nathaniel was accepted by NYU for a doctorate in European History. Aged twenty, two years into the course, Nathaniel met a young woman named Jill Phillips, a biology student, and for the first time the awkward young man found someone he 'liked'. He was a little reluctant to use the word, but after a year he had to call it love. The year was a beautiful, constant bliss, full of giggling and hugging like a sickeningly sweet Hollywood film. In January this year, on the twenty-fourth, the film came to an abrupt halt. Jill collapsed right in the middle of a lecture, and when she woke up a week later, in hospital, she did not have a stroke or brain damage. Her spine did not break, nor her muscles atrophy or organs failed. She simply had a huge case of insomnia. She did not just forget her name or a few dates; she forgot literally everything. The university course, the name of the person who had loved her for nearly three years; it all went out of the window. Both of her parents were dead, and there was no obvious next of kin, so Nathaniel took charge of the situation. Against all sensible advice, he invited her into his apartment, and looks after her with every spare moment.
He does still love her, and suspects that somewhere underneath the blankness and the questions, Jill is in there - all it will take is time. Until then, he will keep working in his little job in Starbucks in his spare time, studying for the letters after his name, and keeping an eye on Jill. It's not a fun life, but it's the one Nathaniel has chosen, and it is not one that he regrets.
